BURUNDI - GENDER EQUITY

BURUNDI - GENDER EQUITY

April 28, 2017

Coffee is often considered a man’s crop, although women serve as the primary labor force in harvesting and sorting. Women have little ownership in the financial returns from the sale of coffee. BD Imports partners with the International Women’s Coffee Alliance in Burundi to not only secure quality coffees but also to promote the idea that quality, gender equity, and profitability can go hand in hand. For the 4th year in a row we have grown the production and participation of women in the program to over 3,000 small-scale farmers. Men and women work together to ensure quality coffees and that women are paid for their labor. Prior to the program, women were required to register the sale of coffee they harvested in their husband’s name. An annual bonus paid to the farmers as a quality premium further encourages farmers to consider allowing women to share in the financial returns.
