GUATEMALA - EDUCATION

Coffee sales go a long way at Los Andes Coffee & Tea Reserve. The remote community is located at the slopes of Atitlan Volcano, Santa Bárbara municipality in Guatemala. Under typical circumstances the children in the community attend local schools that are lacking in providing an adequate education, poor housing, no healthcare, or job opportunities. The production and sale of coffee provides livelihood to 48 families that live and work on the farm in addition to education for 150 primary school children who attend the Los Andes school. Healthcare is provided, and skill building and educational courses are offered for adults. Gender equity education is taught at the school. Women are given leadership roles on the farm, which breaks traditional gender roles to empower women socially and economically. Producing higher quality coffee and selling to buyers like BD affords the community more self-sufficiency and the ability to sustain a higher quality lifestyle.
